Start with the pinks around the base and work up through to the yellows in the centre. This is a little bit fiddly so take care not to squash the flowers you’ve already put in place. You shouldn’t see it once it’s dry. Leave the glue to dry, then carefully remove the pins. Referring to the template (1) on click here, cut two sets of large gerbera petals. Working on the upper set of petals, and referring to the needle felting method on click here, use the rose pink wool tops to needle felt subtle veins down the length of each upper petal.

Leave to dry. Use the picture for reference. Also, the handmade felt accepts the needle felting better and is slightly more sculptural to work with. Using the template on click here as a guide and small sharp scissors, cut out a cherry blossom shape from the pink felt. Switch to a sturdier 36-gauge needle to indent the centre of the flower downwards. Referring to the method on click here, make three pale yellow olive stamens using pale yellow olive wool tops – each about 10cm (4in) long. If necessary, trim these to approximately the same length so that they aren’t too long.

Once the six petals are more or less held together, remove them from the foam and put them straight onto a waterproof surface. Add a fine rose pink stripe down the centre of each petal and a little bit more at the base of each petal. The petals will shrink a little and the pink and red details will become fixed. These spots should be slightly more dense around the base of each petal. Into each, add a small amount of bright yellow around the very edge of this and some emerald green right in the centre.
